New fan policies coming to Big Ten, Fans expected at Husker spring sports

The Big Ten Conference is going to finally allow fans at regular-season competitions.

A source tells KLIN that Nebraska is preparing to allow roughly 2,500 fans into Haymarket Park for baseball games. An announcement from the Big Ten is expected as soon as Tuesday.

Attendance talk ramped up in the last week. NU Athletic Director Bill Moos told the Omaha World-Herald last week that the conference would be making the final decision on football spring game attendance, which became interpreted as a possible opening for all spring sports.

That interpretation gained ground Monday when Purdue announced 50 percent capacity would be allowed at home baseball and softball games the rest of this season.

Purdue’s baseball field has a regular capacity of 1,500 while softball holds 1,000. The Boilermakers are allowing 500 and 200 tickets to be sold for the two venues, respectively. No suites will be used for either sport, “due to operational needs”.

Haymarket Park can hold up to 8,500 between seating (4,500) and the grass berm areas (4,000), while Bowlin Stadium can accommodate up to 2,500 fans for softball games.

Both stadiums will be in use this weekend with the Huskers hosting home-opening series for both sports. Whether or not fans will be in attendance is now just a Big Ten announcement away.
