KGFW Sports – 2 Huskers Honored, Lopers Add 2, Busters Name Coach and High School Update

By Mark Reid May 5, 2021 | 7:12 AM

Husker freshmen Kaylin Kinney and Billie Andrews were both honored with weekly awards from the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday. Kinney was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, while Andrews was selected as the co-Freshman of the Week. Kinney is the first Husker freshman to be named conference player of the week since the 2011 season. During the Huskers four-game sweep of Maryland, Kinney reached base in seven of her eight trips to the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with three home runs, four runs scored and six RBIs. She also started the third game of the series in the circle and allowed only one run in 5-innings. Andrews went 6-for-11 in the Maryland series and matched Kinney with three home runs and six RBIs. Andrews now ranks fourth in Big Ten history with four freshman-of-the-week awards. The Nebraska softball team travels to Iowa for a four-game series this weekend.

Guard Quaran McPherson has announced his commitment to the Huskers. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound three-star prospect from New York also had offers from Auburn, Connecticut, Arizona State, Georgia and St. John’s. He joins a recruiting class already ranked in the top-15 nationally. McPherson’s addition pushes Nebraska’s scholarship count for 2021-22 back to 14 following Shamiel Stevenson’s departure. Nebraska still has one open scholarship. One other basketball note: Former Husker Teddy Allen announced he’s going to New Mexico State, his fifth college destination.

UNK men’s basketball coach Kevin Lofton announced today that Colorado natives Garret Brown and Braden Boley have joined the Lopers. Brown is a 6-6, 200-pound forward from Denver, Boley is a 6-3, 175-pound point guard from Parker. They are the sixth and seventh recruits to date. All-MIAA pick Austin Luger and fellow forward Darrian Nebeker are among several Lopers returning next year.

The Hastings Sodbusters have announced the hiring of Chandler Wagoner as their next Head Coach. A California native, Wagoner is currently a Volunteer Assistant at Kansas, working with the Catchers and Hitters. The Sodbusters will open their season May 22nd, hosting the defending Expedition League Champs, the Fremont Moo at Duncan Field.
