WISCONSIN ENDS HUSKER WINNING STREAK

The No. 6 Nebraska volleyball team saw its 10-match win streak come to an end Wednesday night, falling 3-0 to No. 3 Wisconsin at the Devaney Center. The Huskers are now 16-4, while the Badgers improve to 18-1.

Nebraska fell by 2, 6, and 2 points respectively in each set. 

Nebraska faces its third straight ranked opponent with a visit to No. 11 Minnesota this Saturday, Oct. 30. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn.

 

NEBRASKA BASKETBALL OPENS WITH WIN OVER PERU STATE

It didn’t start as the prettiest debut by any stretch, but Nebraska did what it was supposed to do and pulled away for a lopsided 97-58 exhibition win over Peru State on Wednesday night.

Alonzo Verge Jr. came off the bench and filled the stat sheet with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, eight assists, four rebounds, and three steals in 21 minutes of work.

Nebraska led by at least 10 for the majority of the second half and eventually pulled away with a 19-3 run over the final 5:41 to break the game open for good.

 

BONSALL NAMED MIAA WOMEN’S COACH OF THE YEAR

Nebraska-Kearney head cross country/track and field coach Brady Bonsall has been named the 2021 MIAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. 

The Lopers won the 2021 MIAA title this past Saturday at the Kearney Country Club.

Bonsall has led UNK cross country since 2007 and the track team for the past 12 years. His daughter, Grace, was UNK’s top finisher at the MIAA Championships, placing fifth overall. Previously, Bonsall was the 2015 MIAA Men’s Cross Coach of the Year. 

 

STORM HIT TRADE FOR DRAFT PICKS

Tri-City Storm has completed a transaction with the Muskegon Lumberjacks to acquire multiple draft picks. Tri-City has acquired a 6th Round draft pick in the 2023 USHL Phase I Draft and a 6th Round draft pick in the 2023 USHL Phase II Draft. In exchange, the Storm have traded forward Parker Lindauer and a 10th Round draft pick in the 2023 USHL Phase I Draft to the Lumberjacks.

CHINANDER – DAVID BELL A BIG WEAPON FOR PURDUE

One of the keys to success for Purdue this season has been the big games from receiver David Bell, who defensive coordinator Erik Chinander adds has been a noticeable weapon since last year…

Bell has had three 100 yard receiving games so far this season, including an 11 catch, 240 yard performance against Iowa that included a touchdown.

 

CHINANDER – FARMER READY TO STEP UP

Deontai Williams, tied for the Big Ten lead in interceptions, will miss the Purdue contest with an injury. Taking his spot is reserve Myles Farmer, who defensive coordinator Erik Chinander adds is up for the task…

Farmer has four created turnovers so far in his career, including a forced fumble last year and a fumble recovery this season.

STORM’S EERNISEE ANNOUNCES COMMITMENT TO St. THOMAS

Tri-City Storm forward Josh Eernisse has recently announced a commitment to play collegiate hockey in the future at the University of St. Thomas (MN). Eernisse is currently in his second season with the Storm.

Josh Eernisse, 19, of Eagan, Minnesota, has skated in six of Tri-City’s seven games played to this point in the 2021-2022 regular season. He scored one goal and recorded six assists in thirty-three games

 

HUSKER SOCCER NAMED TO BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nebraska freshman Abbey Schwarz was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week following the conclusion of the regular season.

Schwarz finished the season with one goal and one assist against Minnesota to help the team to its third-straight win and fifth shutout

The Huskers were unable to qualify for the conference tournament that will take place Oct. 31-Nov. 7 but finish the year on a high note with three-straight wins against Big Ten opponents. 

 

KEARNEY HIGH & STARS EARN PLAYOFF BIDS:

Both Kearney High and Kearney Catholic earned playoff bids after their regular seasons concluded on Friday night. 

Kearney Catholic finished 9-0 and earned a #2 playoff seeding, meaning they will likely host all playoff contests heading into the State Final. The Stars take on 6-3 and #15 Boys Town on Friday at 6 PM.

The Bearcats earned a #13 seed after punching their ticket in on Friday’s win over Omaha Northwest. Kearney will face a familiar foe in Elkhorn South, this time on the road in a contest starting at 8 PM on Friday.
