NEBRASKA – Gothenburg’s dominant streak from the past two seasons have now awarded their head coach a top honor.
Head coach for the Gothenburg Swedes Cross Country program Tony Neels earned the 2023-24 Nebraska Coaches Association Hudl Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year for his team’s past season performance. The announcement was posted on Monday by the NCA.
The Swedes Boys Cross Country team earned their second straight Class C state title this past October, earning the 2023 Championship with a team score of 38. They were led by freshman Tyler Hetz ending with a time of 16:35.9, ending his first varsity season as the state runner-up.

Gothenburg then placed three other runners in the Top 25, including senior Parker Graves (8th; 17:20.8), senior Ethan Olsen (15th; 17:27.5), and junior Yahriel Gaeta (25th; 17:53.2). Senior Nathan Sager placed 44th (18:18.3) and freshman Evan Pelzer was 55th (18:32.4).

The Swedes were also District C-5 champs by 35 points, ending with five runners in the top 12.
