GRAND ISLAND — The future is now for the Grand Island Children’s Museum, and that future comes with a re-branding. The museum announced that it will now be identified as the EPIC Discovery Center.
Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele joined the festivities to give museum organizers a ceremonial key to the facility, which is the old armory building next to Ryder Park on Old Potash Highway.
EPIC’s residency in the facility also launches a new fundraising campaign. The project has been awarded a $5 million grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s 2023 Shovel-Ready Grant Program. This grant will match all gifts to help develop the old armory building into the EPIC Discovery Center.
Executive Director Alison Larson detailed plans for the center, which will be an 18,000-square-foot building with two stories of exhibit floor space. They will offer programming spaces, a kitchen, retail, office space and outside access via two large garage doors.
The EPIC Discover Center will be an emerging STEAM-based children’s museum that will provide both exhibits and programming for children of all ages. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
