GRAND ISLAND – A four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference maker at Ryder Park in Senior Legion Baseball action Tuesday night, as the Kearney Misko Seniors fell to Grand Island Home Federal 6-1. Click here to listen to the broadcast replay.
Kearney (3-5) fell scoring one run on five hits with two errors while Grand Island Home Federal earned the home win scoring six runs on eight hits with three errors.
The Misko Seniors and Home Federal started in a scoreless opening frame, as Grand Island’s Cohen Nelson was hot early knocking down batters quickly while Kearney’s Derrick Nonhof held his opposition at bay.
Kearney would strike first, getting an RBI single by Tysen Cabela in the top of the second scoring Jase Blattner. Grand Island would garner their own hit, but would not be able to tie the contest until the fourth inning.
The Misko Seniors defense was showcasing their athleticism early, as outfielder’s Jacob Hansen and Blattner made terrific catches in the early stretch to put down Grand Island batters. Blattner showcased a full-extension diving nab in the third, trapping a ball in the glove on a dead sprint towards right-center field. The catch, however, proved costly as he left the contest and would not return.
After a switch in the defensive lineup heading into the bottom of the fourth, the game began to unravel for the visiting Misko Seniors. Kearney allowed three consecutive base hits to lead-off, followed by a missed throw on a force-out at second that scored two runs. Grand Island would then take two more runs in, leading 4-1 after the fourth.
Home Federal would continue to add on in the middle innings, scoring two additional runs in the fifth inning as Nonhof’s replacement Rhett Mundorf aimed to keep the Misko Seniors within reach.
Cohen Nelson ended his day working 5.2 innings, knocking down eight batters with four on looking strikeouts. Nonhof would field the loss working four innings allowing five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts.
