Nebraska baseball’s first home weekend left plenty to be desired.
The 8-11 Huskers took Friday’s game 13-12 before falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12-10) 4-1 Saturday then 21-4 Sunday.
The 37 runs given up on the weekend are the most in three days since giving up 38 in a four game series at Oregon State in 2019. The last three game series to suffer as much damage was the 37 runs by Oklahoma in 2009.
In the first game, both teams notched runs in each of the first three innings. The Huskers then jumped out in front 9-6 courtesy a five run sixth inning.
The Islanders looked to put the game away with four runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but the Nebraska bats came alive in the bottom of the ninth.
The Huskers plated four runs for their third walk-off win of the week.
Starter Kyle Perry left in the first inning with an injury, leaving the bullpen to take over from there. Mason Ornelas earned the win with 1.2 innings of action at the end of the game, striking out six and allowing just one hit.
At the plate, Griffin Everitt had himself a day. The senior went 3-for-4 and ended a single shy of the cycle. He led the Huskers with four RBIs.
Brice Mathews also notched a home run.
Game two saw the bats disappear for Big Red.
Nebraska scored just one run on one hit on the day. The Islanders, meanwhile, got on the board in the first inning before adding anothe run in the seventh and two more in the ninth.
Shay Shanaman was more than serviceable in his 6.2 innings on the hill. He gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out five.
Sunday’s rubber match is one that the Huskers would much rather forget ever happened.
The Islanders scored in seven of the nine innings, including three in the first, five in the third, and six in the sixth. The Huskers scraped across a pair of runs in each of the seventh and ninth innings, only putting together four hits on the day.
The 23 hits for TAMU-CC are the most since 22 for Uconn in the 2019 regionals. The 17 run loss is the most lopsided since a 19-2 loss to Oklahoma State in 2008.
The non-conference series loss at home is the first for NU since 2017.
Nebraska stays at home to host South Dakota State Wednesday before starting Big Ten Conference play hosting Michigan next weekend.
