Nebraska baseball was primed for the first win of the 2023 campaign, but a back-breaking fifth inning helped San Diego clinch the series with a 10-9 walk-off win.
The Huskers are now 0-3 to start the season.
NU jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning to start a trend of tallying at least one run in each of the first six innings. Max Anderson and Dylan Carey both notched home runs during that stretch.
Nebraska led 8-2 halfway through the game as disaster struck.
Husker starter Caleb Clark was pulled in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded. Brett Sears entered the game and faced just three hitters without recording an out. Kyle Perry then finished out inning, stopping the bleeding at five runs.
Nebraska scored one run in the sixth while San Diego added two to tie the game 9-9.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Toreros got a leadoff single with the runner advancing to second base on a balk. An RBI single gave USD their third win of the series.
Anderson led the Husker hitting with three on the day. Carey, Josh Caron, and Casey Burnham also had multi-hit efforts as Nebraska posted 10 hits as a team.
The Huskers and Toreros wrap up the four-game series Monday at 2 p.m. CST.
