KEARNEY — Friday night lights at Miles Field got kicked off tonight as the Kearney Catholic Stars hosted Doniphan Trumbull in a spectacular football game.

The Stars and Cardinals both started out trading possessions tied 0-0. Stars got on the scoring started with safety thanks in part to a Cardinal snap going out of the end zone.

The Stars led by Carson Murphy and Brandt Christner extended the Star led to 9-0. The Cardinals responded behind the arm of Jaden Williams to Kaeden Detamore as the Cardinals found pay dirt making it 9-7. The Stars ended the first half with adding another touchdown extending their lead to 16-7.

After the extended halftime due to lightning delay, both sides showcased strong defensive performances as neither offense could capture much success inside either teams red zone.

Cardinals QB Jaden Williams caught the Stars defense off guard as he threw the game’s biggest play as he Jack Poppe on an 82-yard touchdown pass. Stars defense once again made an impact blocking the PAT, Stars lead 16-13.

Star defense put a stamp on the game as they limited the Cardinals as the game stayed tight. Until the stars extended their lead to 22-13. Stars punter pinned the ball deep at the Cardinals six-yard line.

Stars defense once again showed up big with a near safety by Javier Copley who sacked QB Jaden Williams at the one-yard line.

The crowd erupted as chants of “He’s only a freshman” echoed Miles Field making the environment quite exhilarating. The stars rode the momentum to victory.

The Stars captured their season opening with a win in this 22-13 defensive dominated contest.

Both teams look to their next opponents. The Stars hit the road to face Hershey and Doniphan Trumbull returns home for West Holt.
