HUSKER WOMEN ROMP ALCORN STATE:
Alexis Markowski scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Nebraska to a 79-32 women’s basketball win over Alcorn State on Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Markowski hit 6-of-11 shots from the field and 8-of-10 free throws to post Nebraska’s first individual 20-point performance of the season. Her strong play inside helped the Big Red improve to 3-0, while Alcorn State slipped to 0-2.
Nebraska returns home on Sunday, Nov. 19 to battle Creighton at 1 p.m (CT).
ALBERTS RECEIVES EXTENSION; SALARY INCREASE TO 2031:
University of Nebraska President Ted Carter announced Tuesday that he has granted Athletic Director Trev Alberts a new contract that will keep the Huskers’ leader in Nebraska through at least 2031.
Carter pointed to a number of major achievements in Husker Athletics since Alberts took the helm in 2021, including the historic Volleyball Day in Nebraska that broke the world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event, the hiring of head football coach Matt Rhule, and a new 15-year, $300 million multimedia rights agreement with Playfly Sports that is one of the most comprehensive in the country.
Carter said he structured Alberts’ new contract based on a thorough review of compensation packages for other Big Ten athletic directors, with a goal of keeping Nebraska highly competitive in the market and retaining Alberts for the long term. The new contract includes:
An annual base salary of $1.7 million, increasing to $2.1 million in 2026, a $3 million completion bonus if he completes the entire eight-year agreement, Liquidation damage buyouts that will be paid to the university if Alberts were to leave for another opportunity.

LOPER WOMEN BLAST CENTRAL CHRISTIAN TO OPEN HOME:
The Nebraska Kearney women’s basketball team hit 12 second half three pointers and 12 different players scored in a 105-35 win over Central Christian (Kans.) College Tuesday night at the Health & Sports Center.
This was the start of a four-game home stand for the Lopers (3-0) who face Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday (Nov. 18), the College of Saint Mary next Wednesday (Nov. 22) and Chadron State (Nov. 25) right after Thanksgiving.
UNK hosts NWU on Saturday at 2 p.m. as part of “Alumni Day” with the men battling Chadron State at 4 p.m.
CREIGHTON DOWNS IOWA WITH ALEXANDER’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE:
For the second consecutive game No. 8 Creighton men’s basketball used an early second half surge to seize control as the Bluejays defeated Iowa 92-84 in Gavitt Tipoff Games.
Trey Alexander came one assist shy of the first points/rebounds/assist triple-double in Creighton history, finishing with a season-high 23 points in addition to career-highs in rebounds (11) and assists (9).
The win lifted Creighton to 3-0 on the season, while Iowa fell to 2-1 overall. The Bluejays return to action on Saturday, November 18 as it hosts Texas Southern at 7:30 p.m. at CHI Health Center Omaha.
HUSKER MEN HOST STONY BROOK:
The Nebraska men’s basketball team looks to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2018 on Wednesday as the Huskers play host to Stony Brook in the second game of the Cornhusker Classic at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Tipoff between the Huskers and Seawolves is set for 7 p.m.
Nebraska (3-0) used a strong performance on the defensive end to subdue Rider’s upset bid in a 64-50 win on Monday night.
Stony Brook (1-2) comes off an 85-63 loss to Duquesne on Monday.
KGFW’s pregame begins at 6 PM.
SHELLEY ADDED TO WOODEN AWARD WATCH LIST:
Nebraska’s Jaz Shelley was one of 50 women’s basketball players nationally named to the Wooden Award Preseason Watch List
Shelley is one of 20 shooting guards nationally in the hunt for the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award. The preseason first-team All-Big Ten selection was also a first-team All-Big Ten guard last season for the Huskers.
Shelley is leading Nebraska with team-best averages of 16.0 points, 6.5 assists and 3.0 steals to go along with 4.0 rebounds per game for the 2-0 Huskers.
HUSKER FOOTBALL’S WHITE ADDED TO BROYLES AWARD NOMINEES:
The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced the nominees for the 2023 Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coaches.
Nebraska Football’s Defensive Coordinator Tony White was named to the nominee list.
The Blackshirts have improved dramatically, allowing nearly one hundred less rushing yards per game, and over one hundred total yards less per game compared to 2022.
LOPER FOOTBALL EARNS SEVEN ON ALL-MIAA TEAM:
The Nebraska Kearney football team has placed seven players on the 2023 All-MIAA squad.
Super senior defensive lineman Tell Spies (Mullen) leads the way as he was a second-team honoree.
Next, super senior offensive lineman Hunter Hays (McCook) and super senior cornerback Armani Webster (Chicago) were selected to the third-team.
Finally, graduate quarterback TJ Davis (Colorado Springs), graduate linebacker Zach Schlager (McCook), super senior safety Tre O’Guinn (Peoria, Ariz.) and junior defensive end Quillan Felton (Lithonia, Ga.) all were given honorable mention accolades.
Davis joins linebacker Tyke Kozeal (2013-16) as the only Lopers to be four-time All-MIAA honorees.
FOUR BRONCO VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS NAMED ALL-GPAC:
The 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Volleyball All-Conference Team has been selected.
Four Hastings Broncos were selected for All-Conference GPAC recognition. Those include: Makenna Asher and Majesta Valasek on the second team, as well as Miriam Miller and Isle Benne with honorable mention.
