HUSKER VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS TECH TO ENTER REGIONAL FINAL:

The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team swept 12th-ranked and fifth-seeded Georgia Tech Thursday afternoon in a third-round NCAA Tournament match in front of 8,580 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

With the win, the Huskers (31-1) advanced to an NCAA Regional Final for the 11th time in the last 12 years. Nebraska will play the winner of No. 2 seed Kentucky and No. 3 seed Arkansas, on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Devaney Center.

Nebraska was impressive and efficient in posting its third sweep in three postseason matches. The Huskers hit .326 in the match, just the third time this season that a Georgia Tech opponent hit .300 or better.

ALEX GORDON ADDED TO COLLEGE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME:

Former Nebraska baseball standout Alex Gordon is one of 12 inductees to the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023. The group is set to be inducted on February 15, 2024 at the College Baseball Hall of Fame Foundation’s Night of Champions event in Overland Park, Kan.

After earning freshman All-America honors in 2003, Gordon was honored as a first-team All-American in both 2004 and 2005. He was the consensus national player of the year, while winning the Golden Spikes, Brooks Wallace, Dick Howser and the ABCA National Player of the Year Awards.

A third baseman with the Huskers, Gordon led the Big Red to a school-record 57 victories in 2005, when Nebraska captured its first College World Series victory. A career .355 hitter in three seasons at Nebraska, Gordon finished his NU career in the top 10 of eight offensive categories, as he was third in total bases (447), fourth in home runs (44), runs batted in (189) and doubles (53), eighth in runs (188), ninth in hits (249) and slugging percentage (.657) and 10th in triples (11).

NEBRASKA MEN’S SECOND HALF DOOMS HUSKERS IN BIG TEN OPENER:

Brice Williams had a team-high 18 points, but Nebraska went ice cold in the final 20 minutes, as Minnesota rallied for a 76-65 victory Wednesday evening at Williams Arena.

Williams had 17 of his 18 points in the opening 20 minutes, but Nebraska (7-2, 0-1 Big Ten) shot just 29.2 percent in the second half, while Minnesota shot 59 percent in the second half and overcame a 15-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Huskers, 52-26 after halftime.

The Huskers return home to take on Michigan State this Sunday, Dec. 10.

HASTINGS WOMEN SECOND HALF SURGE OUTPACES FLAMES:

The Hastings College women’s basketball team utilized a huge second half to run away from College of Saint Mary 84-62 on Wednesday night inside the Lied Fitness Center.

After falling behind 34-29 at halftime, it was all Hastings in the second half. HC outscored the Flames 23-14 in the third, as the Broncos eventually grew the lead to as many as 24 before winning 84-62.

Hastings is now 4-6 (2-4) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Dec. 9 hitting the road to take on NAIA No. 2 Dordt with tipoff set for 2:00 pm in Sioux Center, IA.

SOTO TRADED TO YANKEES IN BLOCKBUSTER:

Juan Soto is headed to the New York Yankees in their first big move following the team’s worst season in three decades.

New York acquired Soto and Gold Glove center fielder Trent Grisham in a blockbuster trade with the cost-cutting Padres on Wednesday night. San Diego received right-handed pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vásquez and Drew Thorpe along with catcher Kyle Higashioka.

It was the second monster deal involving the 25-year-old Soto in less than two years. The three-time All-Star slugger has one season of team control left and is likely to get a salary around $32 million after batting .275 with 35 homers, 109 RBIs and a .930 OPS in his only full season with the Padres.
