KEARNEY — The Buffalo County Commissioners voted to deny an application for the Heritage Hills Subdivision during their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Tyler and Karmen Wilterding and Ryan and Rutheah Rodehorst, has applied for a preliminary plat for a “Heritage Hills Subdivision” located at the property 10635 1st Ave., north of Kearney.

Mitch Humphery, a licensed land surveyor with Buffalo Surveying, appeared representing the applicants.

Humphrey said that the land had formerly been the Christian Heritage foster care homes, which been permanently closed.

He said the applicants were seeking to divide the property up into four different lots, but did note that doing this creates issues meeting the county’s zoning qualifications.

Dennise Daniels, Zoning Administrator, appeared before the commissioners and said after a review of the proposed plat, she recommended denial due to the current zoning regulations.

Daniels did note the applicants have 10 days after the denial to request a variance.

The commissioners voted to deny the application for the subdivision.

Daniels also appeared regarding a Nebraska Department of Transportation proposed highway project named “Miller – Buffalo/Custer County Line.”

The project had been discussed at the last meeting with the NDOT requesting comment on if there were any historic properties along the project route.

After a review, Daniels said there were no registered historic properties along the route and requested sending a letter to the NDOT with these findings. The commissioners voted their approval.

During the facilities update, Steve Gaasch, Facilities Director, spoke and noted the addition at the courthouse continues to progress with the hanging of sheetrock and mudding currently ongoing.

For the former Western Inn-Midtown and The Lodge location, Gaasch said the last day before the utilities are shut off is Nov. 10. He said demolition will begin in either mid or late November.

During the road department period, John Maul, Highway Superintendent, appeared to set a bid date for Tuesday, Nov. 26 for a bridge project on Custer Road and a road project on 160th Road, half a mile east of the Riverdale Road.

The commissioners approved setting the bid date.

During the regular agenda, Commissioner Myron Kouba read a resolution regarding Operation Green Light for Veterans.

According to the National Association of Counties (NACO), “America’s counties have a long and proud history of serving our nation’s veterans, a legacy that continues to this day as we work with our federal, state and local partners to ensure that the former service members have access to the resources they need to thrive.”

“Once again this Veterans Day, the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO) invite the nation’s 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs to join Operation Green Light and show support for veterans by lighting our buildings green from November 4-11, 2024. By shining a green light, county governments and our residents will let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported.”
